You have a collection of t-shirts – from athletic events, plays, travels, special events, maybe some shirts that hold special memories of loved ones – and you’d like to turn that collection into a special, usable, cuddle-able memento. How about a t-shirt quilt?!? Bring me a pile of shirts and I hand you back a completely finished, ready to use snuggly quilt. I will care for your treasured shirts as if they were my own. In my studio. I only take on a very limited number of projects at a time, so you can be certain your project will get my full attention.
What size will my quilt be?
That depends; how many shirts do you want to use? How big are the designs on the shirts? Do you want each block ‘framed’ with a solid color fabric? A simple example: 12" square blocks, 5x5 grid (25 total shirts used), 2” border all the way around, no framing around the blocks = overall size 64”x64”. Don’t have enough shirts for a big quilt? We could plan a wallhanging instead, or a small throw to go over a chair.
How long will it take?
Plan on at least 6-8 weeks from drop off to pick up; even more time should be allowed around Christmas and graduation seasons.
What do I need to do to prep the shirts?
All shirts should be freshly laundered, without the use of fabric softener. Laundering is especially important if it is a deeply colored shirt that has never been washed. It would be sad to have that UW red shirt run all over the rest of the shirts in your quilt!! It's very helpful if you cut off the sleeves, the side seams, and the shoulder seams before you bring both the fronts and the backs of the shirts. I will send a drawing that shows how to do this - talk to me before you cut!!
How much will it cost?
Pricing is very individualized based on the requirements of the project, but you can estimate a cost of $18/shirt ( no matter the size of the shirt or the printing on it) for unframed blocks, and about $20/shirt for framed blocks. I can give you a much better idea once we've talked about your individual project. The pricing you are given is for a completed, ready to use quilt, and includes design, construction, framing fabric if used, and finishing.
